The Republican era was a period of radical redefinition and development of women's rights in Türkiye. The Republic of Türkiye, founded in 1923 under the leadership of Atatürk, granted women equal rights in many areas of education, political participation and social life. In fact, since the early years of the Republic, women have made significant gains in many areas such as civil and criminal law. This article will examine the rights of Turkish women during the Republican era and the effects of these gains today.
REPUBLICAN PERIOD ACHIEVEMENTS IN EDUCATION
After the foundation of the Republic, many legal regulations were introduced for women's education. At all levels of education, from primary school to university, barriers to women's education have been removed and there has been a significant increase in the number of female students.
WOMEN'S RIGHTS IN THE POLITICAL SPHERE
During the Republican era, women's participation in political life also increased rapidly. In 1930, women were granted the right to vote and be elected in municipal elections and in 1934 in general elections. Turkish women were the first Muslim women to obtain this right, which is an important historical milestone.
CIVIL AND CRIMINAL LAW
With the 1926 Civil Code, equality between men and women was taken as a basis and it was emphasized that women are legally equal to men. In addition, many legal arrangements have been made to combat violence and discrimination against women.
REFLECTIONS OF WOMEN'S RIGHTS TODAY
The achievements of the Republican era have largely shaped the social and political position of Turkish women today. However, protecting these gains and fighting for new gains is also an important task in today's Türkiye.
